July 16, 2013 marked the tenth anniversary of the passing of author Carol Shields -- a loss that is still felt profoundly by her family, friends and writing colleagues. But despite her absence, readers in Canada and beyond still find Carol's voice strong and resonant, as a recent tribute on the website of the Carol Shields Literary Trust attests.
This fall, Project Bookmark Canada will acknowledge Carol's writing with our first Bookmark in central Canada. Winnipeg's Osborne Village was a favourite place for Carol and her husband, Donald Shields. It also served as a setting for part of her book The Republic of Love, and its a passage from this novel that will appear on the Bookmark -- the 13th in our national network of sites and stories. The Gas Station Arts Centre, near the intersection of River Avenue and Osborne Street has graciously agreed to host the installation.
More details and the date for the fall unveiling will be announced shortly. In the meantime, summer is a great time to (re)read this beautiful novel about love and place.
