What’s a Bookmark?

A Bookmark is a poster-sized ceramic plaque with text from a story or poem. A Bookmark can be found in the exact physical location where the literary scene takes place, so that the visitor can read the story or poem while standing just where the narrator or characters stand.

History

Project Bookmark Canada launched to the public in 2009 with its inaugural Bookmark, installed at the Bloor Street Viaduct: a passage from Michael Ondaatje’s iconic Toronto novel, In the Skin of a Lion. But like all good ideas, Project Bookmark Canada was a long time in the making. Project Bookmark Canada founder Miranda Hill had the idea way back in 2000 while pushing her then small children in a stroller through a downtown Toronto neighbourhood that served as the setting for a number of books. With the assistance of advisors, supporters, and its first board, Project Bookmark Canada received official non-profit status in 2007, and its charitable registration in 2009. Funding for the first Bookmark was raised with the incredible support of Bookmark supporter Lawrence Hill. Subsequent funders include individuals and organizations, such as the Ontario Media Development Corporation.
